A "chromatic" halving: the reward decreases every month by a factor of (1/2)^1/12 — exactly half per year. The ratio between two consecutive months equals the ratio of frequencies of two adjacent semitones in a musical scale, hence the name. Blocks arrive once per second, and about 96% of the 28.7 billion supply is already mined.

DOGE halvings ended in 2015. Since block 600,000 the reward has been permanently fixed at 10,000 DOGE — about 5.26 billion new coins per year. Emission is infinite but constant: by design, so DOGE stays a currency for spending rather than an asset to hoard.

What halving is

Halving — an event written into the cryptocurrency's code, at which the miners' reward for a found block is cut exactly in half. It happens regularly, after a fixed number of blocks. After a halving, half as many new coins enter the network.

The word «halving» comes from half. If a miner received 6.25 BTC per block before the halving, afterwards it is 3.125 BTC. Network difficulty, block time and every other parameter stay the same — only the reward changes.

A halving is not a random event, nor a decision made by developers: it is a mathematical rule built into the protocol from the very beginning. It cannot be cancelled, postponed or altered without the consensus of the whole network.

Why halving exists

Halving performs several critical functions that set bitcoin apart from fiat currencies.

A deflationary model

Central banks print money without limits, which causes inflation. Halving does the opposite: over time fewer and fewer new coins appear. That creates an artificial deflation — the same effect gold has.

The stock-to-flow effect

S2F = stock / annual flow. After a halving the flow drops by half and S2F doubles. Gold's S2F ≈ 62. After the 2024 halving bitcoin's S2F ≈ 122 — twice that of gold.

An incentive for miners

A lower reward forces miners to optimise their hardware and cut costs. The inefficient ones switch off, the efficient ones stay — and the network becomes more resilient.

Predictability and trust

Anyone can check when the next halving happens — it is written in the code. No committee can decide to «print more» coins. That is the foundation of trust.

Important: a halving ≠ an automatic price rise. It reduces the supply of new coins, but the price is set by demand. A halving creates potential conditions for growth, it does not guarantee it.

Halving mechanics under the hood

Understanding the technical side lets you go beyond «what happens» and see «why».

Step 1. A miner finds a block

The miner picks a nonce so that the block hash falls below the target value. On average a Bitcoin block is found every 10 minutes.

Step 2. Checking the condition

The GetBlockSubsidy() function divides the block height by 210,000 and shifts the initial reward right. Block 840,001: 50 » 4 = 3.125.

Step 3. The coinbase transaction

The reward is written into the coinbase transaction — the only way new coins are created: 3.125 BTC plus the transaction fees in the block.

Step 4. Network consensus

Other nodes verify the calculation. If a miner writes down more than allowed, the block is rejected. There is no central server.

The reward formula

// Bitcoin Core pseudocode function GetBlockSubsidy(nHeight):   halvings = nHeight / 210000   if halvings >= 64: return 0   subsidy = 50 * 100000000 // 50 BTC in satoshi   subsidy >>= halvings   return subsidy

Different halving models

TypeMechanismExamplesDistinctive feature
ClassicThe reward is divided exactly by 2 every N blocksBTC, LTC, BCH, BSV, ZEC, RVN, BEAMIssuance tends to zero
GradientSmall but frequent cuts: DCR −1% every 6,144 blocks, DASH −7.1% once a year, KAS ×(1/2)1/12 every monthDCR, DASH, KASNo sharp cliff — the decline is barely noticeable
Epoch-basedThe cut is tied to an epoch or a large block interval, step −20%ETC, CKBAn epoch ≠ a block; the step is gentler than a halving
No halvingThe reward is fixed for good and no longer decreasesDOGE (10 000 с 2015), XMR (0.6 с 2022)Issuance is endless but constant — the «tail emission»

Historical impact of halving on price

Bitcoin data — the only coin with four completed halving cycles.

HalvingDatePrice beforeLow afterwardsHigh afterwardsGrowth from the lowTime to the peak
#128.11.2012$12$12$1 151+9 492%~12 months
#209.07.2016$651$534$19 891+3 624%~17 months
#311.05.2020$8 721$3 867$69 044+1 685%~18 months
#420.04.2024$64 063$49 700in progress——
The law of diminishing returns: 9,492% → 3,624% → 1,685%. Do not expect a 1000%+ move from the fourth halving. A realistic scenario is a peak in the $120,000–$180,000 range (×2–3 from the low).

What happens to miners

On halving day miners' revenue drops by 50% if the price stays flat. What happens next is the key indicator.

1. Miner capitulation

Inefficient miners sell crypto to pay their bills. Hash rate can drop by 10–30%.

2. Adaptation

The survivors upgrade their hardware and negotiate cheaper electricity. Hash rate recovers.

3. Hash Rate ATH

Within 3–6 months hash rate breaks its previous high — a strong bullish signal.

4. Shift to fees

Fees make up a growing share of miners' revenue. After the fourth halving it is around 10–15%.

Indicator: Puell Multiple — daily miner revenue divided by its 365-day average. Below 0.5 is the capitulation zone (buy). Above 2 is the euphoria zone (sell).

Indicators for tracking a halving

The key indicators that help you tell which stage of the cycle we are in.

Stock-to-Flow (S2F) Ratio

Formula: S2F = stock / annual flow. After a halving the flow halves and S2F doubles.

How to use it: a sharp rise in S2F after a halving points to long-term upside. Do not trade on S2F alone — it is a long-horizon indicator.

Current BTC S2F: ~122. Gold ~62, silver ~22.
Puell Multiple

Formula: daily miner revenue divided by its 365-day average.

< 0.5 — capitulation (buy) · 0.5–1.0 — below average · 1.0–2.0 — normal · > 2.0 — euphoria (sell)

MVRV Ratio

Formula: market cap divided by realised cap.

< 1.0 — accumulation zone · 1.0–2.5 — healthy zone · 2.5–3.5 — overheated · > 3.5 — sell signal

NUPL (Net Unrealized Profit/Loss)

< 0 — Lament · 0–0.25 — Hope/Fear · 0.25–0.50 — Optimism · 0.50–0.75 — Belief · > 0.75 — Euphoria (sell)

Hash rate and difficulty

Hash rate is the total computing power of the network. Difficulty adjusts how hard mining is (every 2016 blocks for BTC). Hash rate falls → capitulation. It recovers within 1–3 months → the network is healthy. It breaks its ATH within 3–6 months → a very strong bullish signal.

Trading strategies around a halving

A halving is a process, not an entry point. Here are three proven strategies.

Conservative

Buy 6–12 months before the halving and take profit 12–18 months after it. Historically this returned ×3–10 on BTC. Minimum stress, maximum holding time.

Moderate

Buy in parts: 30% six months before the halving, 30% at the event, 40% on the drawdown afterwards. Take profit in parts at ×2, ×3 and ×5. Averaging lowers the risk.

Aggressive

Buy during miner capitulation (Puell < 0.5, falling hash rate) and trade altcoins that have their own halving. High potential, but it takes experience and a strict stop-loss.

Risk management: never invest more than you are ready to lose. A halving guarantees no profit. Use stop-losses, diversify your portfolio and avoid leverage on long-term positions.
